Search and Fast Search solve related jobs
Search opens a query window, filters by app name or title and switches when you confirm. Fast Search changes the sequence: hold a modifier, type and release it to focus the selected result. That makes the keyboard habit a larger part of the product than simply having a search box.
Contexts documents non-consecutive character matching, acronym preference and learned search shortcuts. Try a few repeated targets to see whether the results become predictable for your own window names. We have not measured keystroke savings or selection accuracy.
The other ways to reach windows
An enhanced Command-Tab lists individual windows and offers Space filtering and selected-window actions. The sidebar groups windows by Space, supports badges and can auto-hide. A trackpad edge scroll gesture provides another route to selecting a window.
These features can suit a desktop organized around Spaces or a mix of keyboard and pointer use. They are different from named project groups: decide whether your mental map is a desktop, a title or a task before choosing a sidebar workflow.
License and supported systems
The official page offers a free trial and lists a $9.99 license for Contexts 3. Version 3.9 explicitly lists Ventura, Sonoma and Sequoia. The published page does not establish behavior on every newer OS version, so test your exact system rather than treating that list as a universal compatibility statement.
For a free, open-source app-bar and grouping workflow, Open Contexts is another option on macOS 13+. It currently lacks Search, Fast Search and gestures, so it is not a substitute for the part that makes Contexts particularly useful to keyboard-search users.
What to test during the trial
- Quit other switchers using the same global shortcuts.
- Search windows with similar titles and with several windows from one app.
- Repeat the same query to check learned matching against your expectations.
- Choose a Fast Search modifier that does not collide with shortcuts in your daily apps.
- Test Space filtering, sidebar visibility and gestures on each display you use.
- Check your actual OS, full-screen apps, hidden windows and window actions before buying.
Who should consider the license?
Contexts is a sensible candidate when typing a short query is how you want to reach most windows, especially if the modifier-and-release Fast Search interaction fits your hands. Its sidebar and gestures add choices beyond keyboard cycling.
If you usually switch between a small active set and want to save its project grouping, compare Open Contexts. If you need visible window pictures, evaluate AltTab as well. The strongest choice depends on the repeated action, not on a feature count.
