Scope and project

Open Contexts is a free, open-source project maintained by zshnb and contributors. This policy describes the current app and opencontexts.zshnb.com. It does not cover independently operated forks or third-party websites.

Data on your Mac

The app does not require an account and has no built-in usage analytics. It uses macOS Accessibility access to identify and activate windows and handle switching shortcuts. It reads app identities, window titles, available document addresses, and window state to display and restore your window groups.

Group names, app identifiers, window titles, available document addresses, ordering, and pinned positions are saved locally in ~/Library/Application Support/OpenContexts/groups.json. Display, language, and shortcut preferences are stored in macOS preferences. Window and group data is not uploaded by Open Contexts.

Window titles and document addresses can contain sensitive information. Anyone with access to your Mac or its backups may be able to read the saved file.

Downloads and update checks

The app uses Sparkle to check for updates hosted on GitHub and download releases. A check or download sends a network request to GitHub and its delivery infrastructure, which can receive your IP address and request metadata. Window titles, document addresses, and groups are not included in these requests. Automatic checks are disabled by default in the distributed app; checks may occur when you request them or enable them through the updater.

GitHub handles these requests under its Privacy Statement.

Website analytics and providers

The website uses Google Analytics 4 to understand visits and improve its pages. It can collect page views, referral sources, interactions such as outbound link clicks, browser and device information, approximate location, and cookie identifiers. See Google Analytics data safeguards and Google’s Privacy Policy.

Cloudflare hosts and delivers the site and may process IP addresses and technical request data for delivery and security, as described in its Privacy Policy. The site loads fonts from Google Fonts, so your browser makes requests to Google’s servers; see the Google Fonts FAQ. These services may process information in countries other than yours.

Website analytics does not give us access to your Mac’s window titles, document addresses, or saved groups.

Cookies, retention, and your choices

Google Analytics uses first-party cookies, including _ga, to distinguish visits. The site also stores your light or dark theme preference in browser local storage. See Google’s cookie documentation.

You can block or clear cookies and local storage in your browser, block analytics requests, or use the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on. Clearing cookies alone does not prevent later analytics requests.

Local app data remains until you remove it. To reset saved groups, quit the app and delete groups.json; this does not clear macOS preferences or backups. You can revoke Accessibility access in macOS System Settings. Uninstalling the app may leave its saved data behind.

Website analytics retention depends on the analytics settings; infrastructure and support records follow their providers’ retention policies. We do not promise a fixed deletion period for records controlled by third parties.

Sharing and support

We do not sell your personal information. The providers above process information needed for hosting, analytics, fonts, downloads, and updates. If you submit an issue or other feedback, we receive the information you choose to share and use it to respond and maintain the project. GitHub issues are public: omit private window titles, document paths, credentials, and other sensitive information.

Questions and policy changes

For privacy questions or requests concerning information you have shared with the project, contact the maintainer through the GitHub issue tracker, initially without sensitive details, to arrange an appropriate follow-up. Rights to access, correct, or delete information may apply under your local law. We cannot retrieve app data that stays only on your Mac.

We will publish policy changes on this page and update the date above. See also our Terms of Service.
